Our Story

Almost a Century of Family Tradition

Since 1936 at the same address on Zvonimirova – a story of four generations, handwork and flavours people remember

Our Story

How It All Began

The story of Slastičarnica Jakšić began back in 1936, when Ivan Jakšić stepped into the world of the confectioner's craft. He learned from master confectioner Kovačić, and his love of sweets, of handwork and of honest craftsmanship soon became the foundation of a family tradition that has lasted almost a full century.

In 1956, Ivan Jakšić fully took over the pastry shop from master Kovačić. From then until today it has stood at the same address, on Zvonimirova Street in Zagreb, where generations of locals come for flavours that take them back to simpler, warmer times.

After Ivan and his wife, the business was continued by their daughters Ljiljana and Biserka, preserving the recipes and methods that made the Jakšić name well known among Zagreb's sweet-lovers. Today the shop is led by Sandra Marčić, Ivan's granddaughter and the third generation, with the daily help of her husband Joško – her right hand and an important link in the family story.

Continuing the tradition is a great joy for us, but also a responsibility.

— Sandra Marčić, third generation of the Jakšić family

To this day we remain faithful to the old recipes and to handwork. Our offer is built on old-fashioned classics – savijače, šaumrole, punch triangles, Doboš cake, walnut rolls, strudels and kremšnite – while the recipe for our Sacher cake dates back to grandfather Ivan's day.

Krafne (doughnuts) hold a special place here. We have stayed true to the classic apricot-jam krafna, just as it was made long ago. The dough, the aroma and the freshness are why guests return year after year – and during carnival season, queues regularly form outside the shop.

We make everything ourselves, from sponge to pastry, with carefully chosen ingredients. Fillings follow the seasons: pinca for Easter, fruit cakes in summer, chestnut in autumn and winter, and walnut & poppy-seed rolls with tea biscuits at Christmas. Our greatest joy is that the fourth generation is joining the story – Sandra's son Dino, who continues working in the shop after training as a confectioner.
